Associate Professor
Hand and Upper Extremity
Alan Koester, MD is Associate Professor and Chief of Hand Surgery at the Joan C Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University. He earned his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine before graduating his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Southern Illinois University. He completed advanced training in hand and upper extremity surgery at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Koester is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Hand Surgery; he is also boarded as a Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME). He has been practicing at Marshall Orthopaedics since 2008, and specializes in surgery of the fingers, hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder, including microsurgery and joint replacement surgery. Dr. Koester also serves as a member of the Permanent Total Disability Board for the State of West Virginia. He lives in Barboursville with his wife.
